2010 Weber Decathlon

Over fall break, we had the first ever Weber Decathlon. It consisted of ten events in which our family of six all competed. The whole point of the competition was to encourage good sportsmanship, cheering others on, and to just have some fun. In the end, we were able to accomplish all three.

SwimmingMacy makes an impressive push off the wall in the swimming competition!

Nerf Gun competitionHere's Allie competing in the nerf gun target shooting. If you've never had one of these guns, you should get one - they're fun!

CornholeBig kids and adults all had handicaps to make it an even playing field. I was not even a contender in cornhole.

Zoe FetchWe had to get Zoe to fetch a toy twice in the shortest amount of time. Tommy (and Zoe) did great at this!

Pancake competitionThe pancake making competition was a tough event because four of the competitors had never ever made their own pancakes before. Not to mention we had a couple burns on the hot griddle. Good life lessons.

Lego creationsAs with the pancake competition, our lego creations faced a fierce panel of judges (Grandma and Grandpa). It was tough, though, because all the creations were great.

Goal kicksHere we had to see how many goals we could make in four attempts. And that goalie was working against us! Way to go Macy!

Mario Kart raceHere Daddy is competing for the best time on a Mario Kart race. He did good, but it is Jack who has some major Mario Kart skills.

I don't have any photos to post of the last two events: Wipeout Challenge (where you try to select who is going to win in an episode of Wipeout) and Bible Memory Verse (where you have to memorize a verse that you didn't know before, and say it perfectly), but we did catch them on some short video clips. Here is the video of our 2010 Weber Decathlon:

Four decathletesHere are four of the decathletes with the medals that they earned. They each won two events, and mommy and daddy each won one event. We had ordered medals ahead of time, so they were all ready for the closing ceremonies.

The entire competition was super fun, but we also learned some lessons through the experience. Steve and I realized that the kids needed to be taught how to cheer one another on. It probably comes as no surprise, but they each seemed to focus on themselves. Thus, they naturally responded with anger when someone else did well in an event. And the tears flowed. However, this is not the spirit that we were trying to foster, so we had to have a couple family talks. And at the time, it seemed pretty disappointing to us as parents, but as we look back on it we realize that this was the perfect opportunity to teach some much-needed life lessons. If anything we learned/taught takes root, then the entire competition would be even more worth-while than originally designed to be. And maybe we will see progress made when the next Weber Decathlon takes place (most likely not for another year or two). All said, it was a great experience!

Flag Football

Playing defenseJack is in a new season of flag football. He is doing great! The coach moves the kids around constantly, so he plays any and all positions. Here he's on defense - go Jack!

Nice pass!My star quarterback just made an awesome pass. Check out that form!

Good grabJack snagged four people's flags in his last game. Way to go!

The Weber Cabin in Greer

Roasting hot dogsJack and Grandpa are roasting some hot dogs for lunch. Good times!

Butler Nature TrailYou can see Jack and Grandma up the trail to give you perspective of the size of the aspen trees. It's so beautiful!

Kids and Zoe
The whole family had a great time on our favorite hiking trail - The Butler Nature Trail.

GeocachingThe kids love to go geocaching with Grandma and Grandpa! We found 4 geocaches, and we took one travel bug that the kids will plant in a geocache in Chandler when we get back.

Hanging bird feeders
We have a favorite activity when we go to the cabin. We make birdfeeders out of pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseed. Grandpa helped the kids hang the birdfeeders out in the trees.

Duck dog
I don't have a photo of Steve and his dad, but they had two great mornings of duck hunting. They brought home 14 ducks! They used one of the little ducks to play fetch with Zoe. She loved it!

Disneyland

Jack on his birthday
We celebrated Jack's birthday a few days early with family, so that we could sneak off to Disneyland at the start of fall break. This is Jack on the morning of his birthday. When it is your birthday at Disneyland, you have to stop in at City Hall and talk to Goofy on the phone and get your birthday button. And then all day long all the cast members, and other people too, wish you a happy birthday. It was a great way to spend Jack's special day.

Mickey Jack-o-lantern
I know you all might think that we are crazy for going to Disneyland so often, but you have to realize that this is probably a once-in-a-lifetime kind of year. It sure seems extravagant! With the Give A Day Get a Day promotion, we could use our free one-day admission to apply towards annual passes, so we decided that this was our chance to do it. We went back in March, and Steve and I snuck away for a couple days in September, and we came again in October, and we just might make one more trip before our tickets expire in March. We have also been blessed to bring Grandma and Grandpa with us twice! In March it was Grandma and Grandpa Weber and this time it was Grandma and Grandpa McInturf. What great fun and great help too! This was our first time seeing all the fall decorations - it was cool!

CanoesThe canoes were totally new to us. We actually rowed the boat! There is no track for the canoes. When you give twenty people oars, and you put one cast member in back to steer, the canoe cruises right along. Not all riders are the best rowers, but keep in mind that they have never had any practice. If you sit in front of Tommy, the ride classifies as a wet ride, but Grandpa sure was a good sport!

Treasure on Tom Sawyer's islandWe had a great time exploring Tom Sawyer's island. This is us on the huge treasure that we found!

Allie dancing in the parade
Allie went out and danced in the parade! She was so cute!

MatterhornThe Matterhorn was a family favorite. We probably did it 4 times. Tommy liked it the first time, but didn't have an interest in going again, and now he claims it was his favorite - that's just how it goes when you're 4.

Pluto and the kids
The characters were all in "costume". You can't really tell, but Pluto is dressed as a bat. The kids thought this was really cool.

Gadget's Go CoasterAnother great ride - Gadget's Go Coaster. It was so fun to watch the kids ride this together. They kept their hands up the whole time!

Running after Goofy
The kids got all excited when they saw Goofy walking down the street in Toontown. Allie and Tommy chased him down. And he just played along by running around in circles. Goofy is always fun!

The whole family with MickeyHere is the whole gang at Mickey's house. We were the first ones to see Mickey that morning!

Buzz Lightyear Astro BlastersThe Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters are super fun! We all continue to improve our blasting skills and compare scores when we get off. I lost track of how many times we rode this ride, but I think Macy was my riding partner every time!

View of Main StreetWe rode the double-decker bus down Main St. as we were headed home for the final time. It was great to see the street from a new point of view - and a good way to sit and relax when we were tired out.

This Disneyland trip was a great start to our fall break! Gotta love a two and a half week break from school in October! What a blessing!

Happy 7th Birthday Jack!!!

Jack's birthday at schoolMy boy is seven!!! He celebrated with donuts at school before fall break. Chocolate with sprinkles is definitely the 1st grade favorite!

Jack's birthdayJack requested a U of A Football party with all of our family. This boy is crazy about football and his Cats! The pool was even warm enough to swim. We all had a great time celebrating Jack!

A Weber September

Back by popular demand, we have made a collage of one video clip from each of the 30 days of September. The month was a bit of a whirlwind, and the piles that now exist in my house and garage are living proof of it. I'm totally fine with that, because we have had a great month! Check it out!
